Why Studying Abroad is a Life-Changing Experience
How students benefit from international experience, by Petra Albrecht, Head of Study Trips & Groups
Studying abroad is much more than an academic pursuit - it’s a transformative experience that shapes your personal growth, career prospects, and worldview. Having lived in France and Italy when I was younger and spending the past 15 years in the UK as a German, I’ve experienced firsthand how immersing yourself in different cultures enhances adaptability, deepens language skills, and creates professional opportunities.
A recent report by the Institute of International Education (IIE), "The Top 10 Reasons to Study Abroad", highlights the many benefits of studying in a foreign country. Their research reinforces what I’ve seen in my own life: students who study abroad gain new perspectives, develop key professional skills, and build confidence and resilience - qualities that will serve them long after their time abroad ends.
Expanding Your Perspective & Cultural Understanding
Living in a new country means stepping outside your familiar surroundings and embracing different ways of life. This broadens your understanding of the world and deepens your appreciation for other cultures. At the same time, it offers a fresh perspective on your own background. My time in France and Italy, and now in the UK, has shown me how much culture shapes identity, communication, and even the way we work. Experiencing these differences firsthand fosters greater empathy, adaptability, and a global mindset - qualities that are increasingly valuable in today’s interconnected world.
IIE’s research supports this, noting that students who study abroad often return home with a greater awareness of global issues and a deeper understanding of their own cultural identity. This ability to think globally and adapt to new environments is essential in both professional and personal life.
Career Growth, Independence & Adaptability
International experience is a strong asset in the job market. Many employers recognise that studying abroad develops key skills such as problem - solving, resilience, and cross-cultural communication. In fact, IIE’s research shows that graduates who studied or interned abroad often have an edge when applying for jobs, as employers value their ability to adapt, collaborate across cultures, and tackle challenges in unfamiliar environments.
Having experience in, and being able to work in multilingual, international environments, has definitely benefitted me and many of my colleagues greatly. I’ve seen how studying or working abroad can add experience, and open doors that might not have been accessible otherwise. Beyond professional opportunities, the experience of living in a new country fosters independence and confidence. Navigating daily life in an unfamiliar place, overcoming challenges, and making decisions on your own builds resilience that stays with you for life.
Language & Communication Skills
There’s no better way to master a language than by living where it’s spoken. Being immersed in a foreign language forces you to practice daily, which accelerates learning in a way that classroom instruction simply cannot. In my experience, speaking multiple languages has not only helped me integrate into different cultures but has also been a crucial skill in my professional life. Employers value candidates who can communicate across cultural and linguistic barriers, making multilingualism a significant advantage.
According to IIE’s research, 68% of students who studied abroad for one academic year credited their experience with helping them secure a job. This highlights how language skills and cross-cultural communication are highly sought-after by employers.
